Our 8574 square kilometres boasts two national parks, one forest park and two heritage areas, all offering the opportunity to experience peace and tranquility or excitement and adventure. Stretching from Punakaiki in the south to Karamea in the north, and inland as far as Springs Junction, the district is home to a population of just over 10,00. We encourage you to get to know us and to find out more about how you can participate in local decision making. Westport is the West Coast’s second biggest town and Buller’s commercial and istration centre.
Westport has several major employers including Holcim Cement, Solid Energy and Stockton Alliance. Born from the rush for gold and later coal, the area still has coal mining running through its veins. An hours drive from Westport, Reefton is located at the heart of the magnificent Victoria Forest Park. Founded in the 1860s with the discovery of the nearby goldfields, Reefton became the first town in the southern hemisphere to have a public supply of electricity in 188. Reefton offers a raft of walks, historic sites and on and off road driving opportunities.
If you don’t feel like venturing off the beaten track, check out the Miners Hut on the main street for a real mining experience!. A short 20 minute loop walk, it is one of the most accessible tracks available and is suitable for wheelchairs and prams. The blowholes are most spectacular when the sea is rough, but the dramatic views of the rock systems and the township of Punakaiki are worth a visit even on the calmest of days. According to tradition, the Maori canoe Tahiriangi, brought the legendary chief Ngahue to the West Coast of the South Island around 950 AD. Archaeological evidence suggests the first Maori settlers in Buller Kawatiri lived a coastal existence, exploring the mountainous, bush clad areas in search for and trading of pounamu greenstone . The first European discovery of the West Coast in 1642 sparked an era of exploration, sealing and the search for land and minerals. It is thought that the Buller Kawatiri River was named by either Heaphy or Fox after Charles Buller, a director of the New Zealand Company. Gold was discovered in the Buller River in the late 1850’s and the confirmation of the existence of gold signaled the start of the gold rush and the establishment of Westport. The hunt for gold eventually gave way to the hunt for coal, a mining heritage that remains a dominant industry force today.
Though the economic focus of the district remains on extractive industry, the focus has shifted to include agriculture, horticulture and tourism
